This new hardware greatly expands our ability to support portable research – to take VR/AR experiences elsewhere either on campus, elsewhere in NZ or overseas. Shortly after the Gear VR headsets arrived, Jon Tunnicliffe from the School of Environment took them to Ngata Memorial College in Ruatoria to demo the Tapuaeroa river models in VR. Jon created these models from drone photography using Agisoft Photoscan, a technique known as photogrammetry. CeR staff members Nick Young and Warrick Corfe-Tan developed a multi-user application to view these models with Unity. Users could see each others position in the models over local wifi.
